What’s the news ?
NIT Hamirpur is going to host the biggest FOSS event of North India on 20th September . If you don’t know what is so special about this day then you may not have heard about Software Freedom Day (SFD) .
So what is SFD?
SFD is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). The main goal in this celebration is to educate the worldwide public about the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, in government, at home, and in business — in short, everywhere! The non-profit organization Software Freedom International coordinates SFD at a global level, providing support, giveaways and a point of collaboration, but volunteer teams around the world organize the local SFD events to impact their own communities.
Who all are participating ?
Participant range from different countries and culture , with more than 1000 registering teams around the globe .Till now more than 20 teams have registered for SFD and they are going to have a blast on the third Saturday of September. Chandigarh , Hamirpur and Jammu are the only places in north India where you can witness this event.
What all happens on this day ?
Each event is left to local teams around the world to organise. Events themselves varies between conferences explaining the virtues of Free and Open Source Software,to workshops, demonstrations, games, planting tree ceremonies, discussions and InstallFests
Who is conducting the event in Hamirpur (H.P.) ?
NIT Hamirpur’s GNU Linux User Group (GLUG) has taken the responsibility of conducting this event and they are preparing very hard to make this event a success.
