Google Plans To Shut Down Google Hangouts By 2020

Google Hangouts service is living its last days (or months) as Google is expected to shut its services sometime in 2020, according to a report by 9To5Google.

While there is no official confirmation regarding the closure by Google, an insider source suggests that Google Hangouts’ end is near.

The news doesn’t come as a surprise as Google had long ago stopped updating Google Hangouts.

To recall, Google Hangouts came was released back in 2013 and saw an overhaul in 2017 in the form of business and enterprise-centric apps — Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet.

While Hangouts Chat, much like Slack, was meant for easy conversations between the team and the organization, Hangouts Meet was introduced as a video-calling platform for fast, easy and convenient meetings.

Both Hangout Chat and Meet are currently available for web, Android and iOS users.

However, Hangouts as part of Google will continue in the form Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet as both platforms are not going anywhere. Additionally, Google Hangouts is a part of Gmail web and users can still use it.

Furthermore, it is expected that Google could unveil new messaging apps, replacing Google Hangouts. To know more, stay tuned!
